Munich’s old centre is compact, pedestrian and unusually orderly. The main axis from Karlsplatz to Marienplatz is closed to traffic and busy from morning onwards; either side of it the streets are quieter within one turn, with courtyards and beer gardens set back from the frontage. The city was rebuilt carefully after the war and it shows in the walking: the scale is consistent and the surfaces are good, which makes it easy to cover a lot of ground without noticing.
