Milan is the Italian city that behaves least like the tourist idea of one. The centre is a working business district that happens to contain a cathedral, and the streets carry commuters rather than crowds photographing things. That makes it a good walk: the pace is brisk, the pavements are wide, the shopfronts are expensive and the arcades give the whole thing a covered, echoing quality that no other Italian centre has.
